As AWĀ Planet is fast approaching its first year of life, those of us who form part of this project want to share our reflections on this new reality, as well as our hope that the learnings from this crisis will shed light on how to deal with the other impending emergency awaiting us: environmental change.
Like COVID 19 today, in 2050 climate change alone will cause more than 500,000 deaths a year, according to the scientific journal The Lancet.
We believe that one of the first teachings of this sanitary, social and economic crisis is the growing realization that we are eco-dependent and interdependent beings living in a complex ecosystem with its own powerful rules. And we are more fragile than we imagined … like so many thousands of other species. However, we are not fully aware of the risks we face.
COVID 19 has catalyzed a swift response by governments, as well as exemplary changes in social and business conduct. Together, we have been able to halt the activity of an entire country to save lives and defend people’s health and wellbeing. In the face of adversity, we have risen to the challenges and discovered that we are stronger, more compassionate and more interconnected than perhaps we ever envisioned.
As we move towards the new normal, we must keep our eye firmly on sustainability, social innovation and the conservation of the environment. Because to stay safe in the future, we must champion a world that is more respectful of the needs of all.
AWĀ Planet wants to contribute to this purpose, supporting the personal and business efforts bearing the weight of this crisis so that, when this is finally over, we can all focus on making the world a healthier and more sustainable place.
