Our planet is 4.6 billion years old. If we were to translate this to a 46-year scale, the time of humans on earth represents merely 4 hours. And, in this very brief period of time, we as a species have generated unprecedented levels of devastation on the earth’s resources, climate and biodiversity.
At the end of 2019, the European Parliament declared a state of climate and environmental emergency, with Europe being the first continent in the world to make it official. In parallel, citizens and consumers increased their pressure on the establishment, making headlines and urging companies and institutions to fulfill their critical duties in advancing responsible and sustainable development. And then came COVID 19.
But in recent months, faced with the challenges of COVID, companies large and small have reacted, understanding the need to expand their roles in society, putting their factories, their products and their ideas at the service of our physical emotional and social wellbeing. They made their purposes tangible, taking them from theory to practice in record time, with the resourcefulness and creativity that has allowed us all to imagine a safer and more sustainable future driven by the transformation of companies into change agents.
COVID has catalyzed the ethical and civic behavior that many consumers were already demanding of brands and their efforts to combat the virus and prioritize people over profits will undoubtedly be rewarded. At the same time, consumers have seen and learned that what is desirable is also possible and will demand new initiatives and continued commitments from the private sector in the face of the social and environmental emergencies afflicting us and that require our undivided attention.
At AWĀ Planet we help companies analyze the emerging scenarios to design strategies, territories and ideas with social impact that materialize their contribution to the common good and a more sustainable future.
